Nutrition Formative Assessment Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) in Nigeria 2025
Client: Confidential Nutrition/Development Partner
Project Period: 2025
Project Summary
Data Axis Consulting Limited (DACL) conducted a Nutrition Formative Assessment focused on Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) aged 9–25 in selected states in Nigeria, including Ekiti, Delta, Ondo, Oyo, and Kaduna as indicated in the case listing. The study was designed to understand the nutrition landscape, identify behavioral and knowledge gaps, and generate practical evidence to guide nutrition communication and intervention design.
The assessment explored key issues affecting nutrition outcomes among AGYW, with particular attention to:
- Nutrition knowledge and awareness
- Food practices and dietary behaviors
- Attitudes toward maternal and adolescent nutrition
- Awareness and acceptance of iron-folic acid supplementation
- Awareness and perceptions of multiple micronutrient supplementation
- Barriers to uptake of nutrition-related services and products
DACL applied a formative research approach to help the client understand not only what AGYW know, but also the social, cultural, behavioral, and access-related factors that influence nutrition decisions. This type of assessment is critical for building effective, audience-centered interventions that go beyond messaging and address real barriers to behavior change.
DACL’s contribution included research design support, tool development, field coordination, data quality control, analysis, and reporting. The outputs provided actionable recommendations for program adaptation, communication strategy, and stakeholder engagement across target states.
This case highlights DACL’s strengths in nutrition formative research, adolescent and youth-focused studies, behavior change research, and public health evidence generation.
